IT Internship Summer 2016

The summer after my Freshman year of college, I had the opportunity to work at Deloitte in Boston as an IT Intern. At this time, my major was still Undeclared Engineering, and I wanted to see if switching to CS or IT Management was something I was interested in.

This was my first experience working in a large corporate environment. I commuted over an hour by train each way into Boston for this internship. I was able to meet and talk to so many interdisciplinary individuals while working at the IT Helpdesk.

I was also responsible for wiping machines of confidential company information, and then reimaging them with the standard company settings and software. I set up and managed over 300 machines for the many new hires and other interns for the summer.

All IT Interns participated in a nation-wide competition to best present the imaging process and potential ways for optimization. I emerged as a team lead, and worked with my team members around the country through Skype. I conducted interviews with IT Executives in the company to compile all of the necessary data and understanding. My team won first place for our presentation.

Finally, at the conclusion of my internship, I flew to Deloitte University in Dallas, Texas for the Enabling Areas Intern Conference. This was a huge learning experience and I listened to some excellent guest speakers describing how to push yourself towards your goals and be successful in the corporate world.

This internship gave me great confidence for future work endeavors, and also great friends and connections. Although I learned that I do not enjoy sitting at a laptop for the duration of the workday, I did learn so much about working in a corporate environment, the value of the IT department in companies so dependent on innovative resources for their day to day jobs, as well as a bit of computer hardware and software engineering.
